Eliza Grace was born on March 15, 2006, at 26 weeks, 4 days, weighing 1 pound 4 ounces and measuring just 11.5 inches long. She is the light of my soul and this is the story of our life in the big city.

Got Complete Medical Nutrition?

The other day a friend was complaining bitterly about the cost of milk these days and how much her two toddlers drink and how ridiculously high the price of a gallon of milk is, blah, blah, blah. Since I buy Eliza's "complete medical nutrition" a/k/a formula in bulk and shell out about $1500 per delivery I never really thought how much the formula cost per gallon (no, no dear readers, neither my insurance company nor the government feel the need to pay for this). So I took out my handy dandy calculator and came up with (are you ready):

$57.49 per gallon

That could get me quite a few of these in a year:

or these:

I was a much happier person before I took out that damn calculator.

Good grief. Now I'm depressed. Pedisure isn't quite as bad - only $26.64/gal. It's a catch-22 too, isn't it? We are thrilled when they start drinking more, but then it costs more.

Oh well. I don't even like shoes.

Yep...is this the cost we have to pay because of financial crisis? you tell me...

Happy blogging,

Toddler Nutrition

OH MY GOD. That's insane. Who owns Resource JFK and how is their stock doing? I'd suspect there are entire sectors of the economy where demand is inelastic and which are continuing to do well despite all of civilized life crashing down around us everywhere else. We should find all of this out, buy a hefty amount of stock, and reap the benefits. Then we should retire to Saba where our kids can teeter along in their Manolo Blahniks and really enjoy pretend play.

I will never again complain about the cost of the brew that I formulate for Hallie, which seems to be around 20 dollars a gallon.

I can't believe your insurance doesn't cover it! Get this - Pediasure is covered by my insurance (which is cheap) but only because it's tube fed.

I wonder if you could Eliza drink through a hose if it would technically be considered tube fed?

Nestle. I think they secretly own the world.

NY State's Insurance Law requires an insurer to pay for enteral formulas that are orally consumed. However, you need a medical reason, like say severe allergies or a physical inability to swallow food. Oxford takes the position that there is no physical reason Eliza can't swallow food; they contend she chooses not to swallow the food. Ironically the are paying for some of her feeding therapy because it is techinically OT and Speech.

But the day I slap a tube in Eliza's belly the idiots at Oxford Health Plans will happily pay probably $50,000 for the surgery and hospital stay (it's NYC,even the hospital costs more), a spanky pump, endless tube feeding supplies and all the formula I want. Makes perfect sense.

But Sarah I do like the hose idea ....

Yikes! With the cost you could eventually own the whole dairy and then sell the milk to pay for the TPN! Love the shoes!!

I like the red shoes. Get some of those. You'll look so hot you won't care how much you're spending on medical nutrition.

That is INSANE...we always have extra...wanna pay shipping instead? ;)

Ah! Finally someone on the same formula! How does Grace do on the Resource 1.5? Do you supplement it with benecalorie?

My name is amy and my daughter is kenzie. Her blog is www.kenziejade.blogspot.com I found your blog I think on yahoo. We just entered Kennedy Kriegers inpatient program last week. Kenzie suffers from a total oral aversion due to months of TPN, central lines, NG tubes, Gtubes and horrible gastro problems that are still undiagnosed.

I was somehow just made it back to an entry about the NYC preschool admissions and was laughing. I lived for 9 years in NYC until Kenzie was born. We only moved away because my husband is a resident in LI at north shore and LIJ hospitals and the commute with call schedules and whatnot would be hard. Needless to say everyone I know is going through those admissions and geez i feel pathetic in comparison. I just want my baby to eat by mouth... the rest seems meaningless.

Id love to know who your new GI is as we have literally seen I think every GI in the ny area.

You can write me at digitalelff@aol.com if youd like. Also id love to get the name of some of your therapists. We were seen by early intervention for almost a year but when we get back I think I need to change some of them as they are not as "feeding related" as I need.

Thanks for such a great blog!

What a goof! Grace is not on Resource...she's on Pediasure...and we add calories.
:0( Sorry about that...We always have 1-2 cases x-tra per mo. I totally wish that could have worked out!

Thanks anyway Amber!

This entire calculation of the cost per gallon has spurred me on to once again get the kind people at Oxford/United Health Care to pay for this stuff. Wish us luck on this round.

If they persist in their refusal and their contention that Eliza's refusal to eat is not "medical," I think it is time I use my law degree for the forces of good not evil and take them to Court. Could be fun.
