Halloween 2009

This year's Halloween was the first "real" Halloween for Eliza. It was the first time she figured out the whole idea of "trick or treat." We spent the day with Hallie, Eliza's best buddy, and Hallie's little sister Lea. Their moms, Abby and Sharon were there too, as was Eliza's Nana. The original plan was for Hallie to be a cowgirl and Eliza to be a Native American. Despite the best of intentions, the girls decided that dueling ballerinas was the way to go.

Philadelphia was a great place to spend the evening. There was a street closed to all but pedestrian traffic and the girls had a grand time. Well you can see for yourselves:

This was the first year my son figured out Halloween too. Now I get what other people mean when they say they see things differently through a child's eyes. Eliza looks great in her costume!

Hallie had tons of fun. Lea, not so much, but she's getting her kicks trying to open the candy containers (those click-clack ones---and she actually did manage to get one open yesterday); steal the candies; eat the paper (paper being a delicious source of fiber for Lea); and then get at the chocolaty nugget inside. She cannot imagine why it is that she is not yet allowed to consume snickers bars. Issues with peanuts and chocolate for those under one year of age aside, I can only shudder at the thought of what a sugar high would do to a baby who is already not sleeping because she's teething.

But give her a year, and that kid will give Hallie and Eliza a run for their money in terms of trick-or-treating. And unlike the older girls, I can virtually guarantee that Lea will be more interested in the candy distributing houses than the craft producing ones. Evidence: Lea tried to eat the eyeball off the little spider that Hallie made at one of the craft tables.
